Discuss the following statement: “Women are not necessarily rare participants in rock music. They are not seen because of the way gender and race inflect the story told.” To support your answer, discuss the careers of Janis Joplin and Betty Davis.

Your answer should consider the relationship between rock and masculinity, and the problem that creates for women, before moving on to a discussion of Joplin and Davis.  You will need to consult the required readings on Joplin and Davis.
